The Mobility and automotive technology research group (MOBI) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) has an internationally recognised, 35-year long tradition of R&D on electric and hybrid vehicles, making it the prime electric vehicle research facility in Belgium. Since traction batteries are key components in current and future electric vehicles, MOBI has made the study of newly-developed traction batteries one of its main research objectives. In that context MOBI has state-of-the-art facilities available for thorough battery testing, and it collaborates with several main actors in the automotive industry as well as with advanced battery developers. For further research in the domain of battery modelling and -testing MOBI is looking for the following positions:
Electric / Electrochemical PhD Researcher
Job description: You will be involved in the testing of advanced traction batteries developed by our industrial partners. Based on the obtained experimental results you will be developing electric- and thermal battery models in Matlab-Simulink™ as well as derived functions such as state-of-charge and state-of-health. These functions will serve as an input for our industrial partners for the development of battery management systems and electric propulsion systems. You will actively participate in the European and Belgian research projects MOBI is involved in, including the attendance of project meetings and conferences. You are willing to carry out the research work in order to obtain a PhD degree in Engineering Sciences.
Profile: Master of Science in Engineering, or Master of Science with specialisation in physics, electricity or electrochemistry. Experience in electric modelling is not an absolute necessity but is definitely considered as an asset. You are an organized team player and are not scared to take initiative. You are fluent in written and spoken English and are willing to travel occasionally abroad. In addition the ideal candidate should have basic knowledge of/ affinity with:
